I am a user experience (UX) design and user research expert with over 40 years of experience in various domains, including banking, payments processing, education, healthcare, and e-commerce. I have a PhD in Cognitive Psychology and have written two books on software user interface design and usability. I am passionate about creating and improving products that are user-friendly, accessible, and engaging.

I founded Interface Design and Development (IDD) in 1993, a consultancy that provides UX design, user research, usability testing, and expert witness services to clients worldwide.

I have served as an expert witness in multiple software litigation cases since 2011, leveraging my extensive knowledge and experience in software design, online consumer behavior, deceptive software design, and website, application, and mobile app usability.

Founded Interface Design and Development (IDD) in 1993 to provide consulting, education, and seminars on software and Web user experience design and usability. 20 years of experience has made IDD a well-know and well-respected consultancy. IDD helps startups, companies and software developers review, design, and evaluate the user experience and usability of their products.

Lead Senior UX Researcher

Stride, Inc.

2021 – 2022

Senior UX Research Lead at Stride (formerly K12). I lead a research team conducting generative and evaluative research on a new high school and young adult learner platform to allow them to pursue careers, learning paths, courses, and certifications to ultimately connect with employers for internships and jobs. Worked directly with company executives to formulate current and future user research strategies.

Responsibilities included planning, conducting, data analysis, and report creation for remote usability testing, interviews, branding studies, diary studies, focus groups, and surveys.

Lead UX Researcher at Keap. Keap is a CRM, sales and marketing automation SaaS platform that serves over 30,000 small business and over 100,000 users. As the Lead UX Researcher, I conducted user research on Keap's web and mobile applications. Responsibilities included: • Conducting UX research of new onboarding and first-time-use experiences • Conducting UX research on overhauled information architecture and navigation design • Researching and implementing new research tools

User Experience Research Consultant

Pearson Education

2011 – 2016

Conduct usability research and evaluation of educational software for Pearson Education. Work with K-12 teachers, students and parents to evaluate web, tablet and mobile Pearson products. Methodologies include lab testing and moderated/un-moderated remote usability evaluations.

Conducted user research (rode in Air Rescue helicopter) on current software use. Designed and prototyped new version of mobile patient charting and data collection system.

I was the usability and user interface design architect for strategic corporate-wide software initiatives within UnitedHealth Group (UHG), one of the largest healthcare insurance companies in the USA. Created a new user experience strategy, architecture and user interface for enterprise applications in healthcare case management and insurance systems.

World Usability Day 2007

The Usability Professionals’ Association (UPA) has announced World Usability Day 2007 will take place on November 8, 2007. This year’s focus will be on healthcare. World Usability Day was founded in 2005 with a mission to increase the public's awareness of the need to make the services and products important to human life easier to access and simpler to use. Global issues such as healthcare, education and government are addressed through expert forums, exhibits, events and initiatives in numerous locations throughout the world. A kick-off for 2007 will take place at the UPA International Conference in Austin Texas on June 13th with a program entitled “ Healthcare Usability in the Trenches.” The program will feature Jason Rossback, Zoll Data Systems, Theo Mandel, Ph.D., Interface Design and Development, LLC and Janine Purcell from the Veterans Health Administration.

Co-Founder and Chief Usability Officer (CUO)

Catalis Health

1998 – 2000

Co-founder of ReCare, Inc. (now Catalis Health), a medical software company, and served as the company's Chief Usability Officer (CUO) from 1998 - 2000. The PC tablet-based system created a paperless electronic medical record for the patient, while providing the physician with specialty-specific information, with the ability to cross reference pharmaceutical information and the documentation of patient specific orders. Mandel created the user interface concepts and implementation for one of the earliest tablet-based Electronic Medical Records (EMR) design efforts.

Senior User Interface Design Architect

IBM Corporation

1982 – 1993

Member of IBM's Advanced Common User Access (CUA) Architecture staff. Conducted research, design, prototyping, testing, and publication of IBM's software user interface architecture. Created prototypes, interface guidelines and interface widgets/controls for Windows, OS/2, and OSF/Motif (Unix), software development tools, and key strategic products developed by IBM, vendors, and customers. Responsible for development, marketing, and delivery of interface design and usability education for IBM and customers/vendors. Liaison and consultant to IBM strategic software business partners. Created and presented demonstrations and education on IBM's direction in user interface architecture and design. IBM Performance: Received three "1" yearly evaluations (highest possible: "far exceeds in all areas") during 11-year IBM career. All other career evaluations were "2" ("consistently exceeds in all areas")

Conducted experimental research on how people learn, remember, and read. Both Master's thesis and Doctoral dissertation researched the role of eye movements in reading comprehension. Worked under Dr. Walter Kintsch, an internationally recognized leader in reading research.

While completing academic work, the computer industry began to realize it was important to learn more about the humans who use computers. I was awarded an internship in Human Factors and Usability at IBM Boulder where I worked on IBM printer interface design, usability and documentation.

My PhD thesis investigated the role of eye movements in reading comprehension.
